The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, said that under no circumstances will he support the European Commission’s proposal to provide Ukraine with a reparation loan at the expense of frozen Russian assets, if these funds are used for military purposes.

Details: The head of the Slovak government announced that he had sent an official letter to the new head of the European Council, Antonio Košta. In his address, Fico warned that at the upcoming meeting of EU leaders, he will block any decisions that provide for the financing of Ukraine’s military needs for 2026-2027.

Direct speech: “I clearly and unequivocally express my position regarding the military conflict in Ukraine. This conflict has no military solution. The EU’s strategy for the conflict is incorrect and ineffective, and the continuation of the war is just senseless killing without strengthening Ukraine’s position in the event of peace negotiations.

Under no circumstances will I support any decision on financing the military needs of Ukraine, in which the Slovak Republic should participate. At the same time, I respect the sovereign right of each EU member state to make a decision on this issue.”

Details: He cites his “peace policy” as the main reason for such a decision, which does not allow him to “vote for the allocation of tens of billions of euros for war.”

Separately, the Slovak prime minister emphasized his support for the “peaceful initiatives” of US President Donald Trump. According to Fico, the use of frozen assets of the Russian Federation for the defense needs of Ukraine may threaten the plans of the United States, since Trump allegedly expects to use these resources for the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine.

Fico also resorted to criticizing Ukraine, mentioning the “corruption scandals” that “we hear about together.” In addition, Fico reprimanded Kyiv for stopping gas transit, which, he said, caused damage to his country.

At the same time, Fico assured that his government remains a “responsible and solidary player” in humanitarian issues. He reminded that Slovakia has sheltered almost 200,000 Ukrainian refugees, is working on new energy and railway connections, and is also repairing border crossings.

Regarding European integration, the prime minister declared his support for Ukraine’s accession to the EU, but noted that the number of skeptics of Kyiv’s rapid accession prospects is growing among member states.

Prehistory:

  • Leaders of seven EU member states wrote a letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the Head of the European Council, Antonio Kosta, in which they call for the use of frozen Russian assets to provide Ukraine with a so-called “reparation loan”.
  • Prime Minister of Belgium Bart De Wever statedwhich does not exclude the possibility of filing a lawsuit if the European Commission approves an unacceptable plan for the use of frozen Russian assets.
  • The Financial Times wrote that the EU intends to quickly adopt a law on indefinite blocking of Russian assets for 210 billion euros to avoid a veto by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
