“The US president said that everyone wants to end the war and that it cannot be the case that the Ukrainians will drag out this moment by seemingly holding on to one or another position. And that’s why I’m definitely in favor of the elections,” the president said.
He emphasized that if the elections are to be held, they must be held legitimately, and here the support of partners will be needed: “If it is possible for the partners to help us organize the election process itself safely in adequate terms, I will support.”
Zelenskyi said that against the background of “signals” from the USA, he asked the People’s Deputies to develop legislative changes for holding elections in wartime.
“So that this was not just a media signal from me, I asked the People’s Deputies of Ukraine to prepare legislative changes regarding the possibility of holding elections during martial law. Today, it is important to end the war, and it is important to end it in a strong position for Ukraine. There was a signal from the United States regarding the elections – I reacted, and I am ready for it,” Zelenskyi said.
He emphasized that there are two important things that need to be worked out: security and legislation. Therefore, he called on key partners of Ukraine and Ukrainian parliaments to “show how both of these things can be worked out.”
Recently, US President Donald Trump said in an interview with Politico that Ukraine’s “time has come” hold presidential elections.
In the EU, after Trump’s words, they said that consider Zelenskyi as the legitimate president and note that the presidential elections in Ukraine should be held when circumstances permit.
During his visit to Italy, Zelensky reacted to Trump’s words, saying that ready for the election.
