Large-scale air attacks by the Russian Federation last Saturday caused serious interruptions in the energy system of Ukraine and the external power supply of three nuclear power plants. This led to a decrease in the capacity of individual reactors and temporary shutdowns of power units.
This was announced by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.
“These interruptions led to fluctuations in electricity production, temporary shutdowns and forced shutdowns of individual power units. In several cases, the units were disconnected from the network or operated at reduced power to maintain the balance of the network and prevent damage to equipment after sudden protection trips,” Grossi noted.
He added that on December 6, the occupied Zaporizhzhya NPP suffered another loss of all sources of external power supply – for the 11th time since the beginning of the war. The blackout lasted for about half an hour, with both external power lines cut 20 minutes apart.
Despite this, the IAEA stressed that the NPP’s nuclear safety systems are working properly, and emergency power sources remain fully available.
“IAEA teams stationed at Ukrainian nuclear facilities continue to closely monitor the situation and maintain contact with the operators,” the statement said.
As part of the IAEA’s efforts to prevent a nuclear accident, an agency team is visiting more than 10 electrical substations in Ukraine this month.
The mission lasts from December 1 to 12 and assesses the extent of damage, analyzes repair work and determines practical measures to increase the stability of the external power supply of the country’s nuclear power plants.
Earlier, the IAEA sent an additional team of experts to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant to assess the safety of the New Safe Confinement (NSC), which was damaged after a Russian drone strike.
