‘I felt a lot of loneliness when I was doing it in my 20s,’ the 53-year-old nepo baby of Blythe Danner confessed to Variety’s Actors on Actors on Tuesday.
‘I didn’t know myself well yet, and I was traveling all the time. I needed to grow up and understand who I really was, and I got a lot of those answers through my family. Then I started a business.’
Paltrow was only 26 when she won the 1999 Academy Award for her cross-dressing leading performance as Viola de Lesseps in the Harvey Weinstein-produced period romance, Shakespeare in Love.
She certainly had a leg up in the industry with the late showrunner Bruce Paltrow as her father and filmmaker Steven Spielberg as her godfather.
The UC Santa Barbara drop-out launched Goop in 2008 as a weekly e-mail newsletter providing new age advice before expanding the brand into e-commerce, a wellness summit, a print magazine, a podcast, and a Netflix docuseries.
‘Marty Supreme came about in an incredible way because [my children] were going off [to college] and I was left with this feeling of shock and disbelief,’ Paltrow said of her acting comeback.
‘Like, “Who am I?” Then I met [filmmaker] Josh Safdie and I knew this would be worthwhile. This felt like the movies we used to make in the 1990s.’
The empty nester portrays Timothée Chalamet’s much older onscreen leading lady Kay Stone in Safdie’s solo feature directorial debut Marty Supreme, which hits US theaters December 25 and UK theaters December 26.
In the lauded film, Paltrow’s wealthy retired actress character makes her comeback starring in a play, which is promptly savaged by critics.
‘The writers actually scripted out the entire review, and it’s so brutal,’ Paltrow noted.
‘Yeah, that would make me sob [in real life].’
The Emmy winner ‘promised’ her famous 82-year-old mother that she ‘would do a play at some point’ after starring in Proof in London’s West End in 2002.
‘Hopefully my reviews wouldn’t be as bad as my [Marty Supreme] character,’ Paltrow said.
A24’s $70 million-budget ping pong drama also stars Tyler the Creator, Fran Drescher, Penn Jillette, Abel Ferrera, Sandra Bernhard, Kevin O’Leary, Odessa A’zion and Koto Kawaguchi.
On Monday, the LA-born blonde glammed up in a $925 GWYN Capsule Collection ‘Broome Dress’ to attend a FYC screening held at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Paltrow seemed thrilled to bring along her 19-year-old son Moses from her decade-long marriage to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, whom she ‘consciously uncoupled’ from in 2013.
The 5ft9in stunner’s strapless black maxi-dress matched her second husband Brad Falchuk’s snug blazer, which he paired with beige trousers and a brown necktie.
