Russia’s Syzran refinery stopped processing oil on Dec. 5 after being damaged by a drone attack, two industry sources told Reuters.

Sources said the drones hit the plant’s CDU-6 crude oil distillation unit, a key piece of equipment that was also attacked by drones in August and required two weeks of repairs.

One of the sources said that the repair work could last about a month.

The owner of the Rosneft refinery did not respond to a request for comment.

According to industry sources, oil processing at the Syzran refinery last year was well below capacity, amounting to about 90,000 barrels per day. Last year, the plant produced 800,000 tons of gasoline, 1.5 million tons of diesel fuel, and 700,000 tons of fuel oil.

The Ukrainian General Staff stated that on the night of December 5, units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine hit the infrastructure of the Temryut seaport in the Krasnodar region of Russia, as well as the Syzransky oil refinery in the Samara region of the Russian Federation.

Earlier, the fire at the refinery in Syzran was reported by local residents, and the mayor of the city, Serhiy Volodchenkov, confirmed the drone attack.

After the start of a full-scale invasion of Russia, various objects on the territory of the Russian Federation are subjected to airstrikes. Most often, in 2024 and 2025, oil refineries (refineries) became the target of attacks.

Most of the attacks were confirmed by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, stating that the Defense Forces of Ukraine “systematically implement measures aimed at reducing the combat potential of the Russian occupation forces, as well as at forcing the Russian Federation to stop armed aggression against Ukraine.”

On December 1, the Bloomberg agency, citing the public statements of the countries, reported that in November, the Armed Forces of Ukraine carried out at least 14 attacks on Russian oil refineries using drones – this is the maximum number of attacks in a month since the beginning of a full-scale war.
