The former head of Naftogaz Yuriy Vitrenko shared his experience of negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and explained why Russian diplomacy remains so cynical and pragmatic.
Vitrenko spoke in detail about the psychological characteristics of Russian negotiators and emphasized that Russia’s main goal in negotiations is its own benefit.
According to Vitrenka, in Russian diplomacy, diplomats occupy secondary positions. “Based on my personal experience, when there were negotiations with Putin, everyone else was simply silent. That is, some diplomats were present there, whose names I won’t even mention, but they were just dummies,” he explained.
The former head of Naftogaz noted that the Russian side is ready to do anything to gain its own benefit, and at the same time has no moral limitations.
“And Putin himself behaves without any special diplomatic tricks. He is not the kind of person who will put on some theater in front of you. The position of the Russian side is simple and cynical: they are simply looking for their own benefit. And for the sake of this benefit, they are ready to do anything you want – to lie, to promise something, while at the same time understanding that they will not fulfill it,” Vitrenko emphasized.
According to him, the Russian leadership sees benefit in blackmail and demonstration of force, including the use of nuclear weapons and the army.
“Putin and the Russian leadership in general see their benefit in this bandit logic. And others, unfortunately, are forced to reckon with this, because Russia is a nuclear power that inherited from the USSR a powerful army, a lot of traditional weapons, and a certain scientific and industrial potential. Well, in terms of size, it is a large country with a large population. If not for all these factors, then Russian diplomacy would not be so effective,” he explained.
Vitrenko emphasized that it is cynical pragmatism, lack of moral principles and the use of force that make Russian diplomacy effective, despite its rudeness and thoughtlessness in the cultural and ethical sense. According to him, international partners should take these features into account during any negotiations with Russia.
