This is a public holiday, although it is not always an official holiday. In Mexico, on December 8, the Feast of the People’s Goddess Maya Ish-Chel (“Rainbow”) is held. In Maya mythology, she is the Goddess of the Earth and the Moon, the patroness of medicine, fertility, female childbirth, weaving and other female handicrafts. At first she was often depicted as a young half-naked woman with a rabbit on her lap, surrounded by moonlight. Later, her image transformed and she was depicted in a skirt with crossed bones with a tangle of snakes in her hair or with snakes as a headdress. She had a celestial snake as her assistant, who, as the Maya believed, carried all the waters of heaven in its belly.

Church holidays on December 8, 2025

Today, December 8, in the Orthodox calendar is the day of memory of the holy monk Patapius. Patapius is a venerable saint of God, whom the Church honors as a holy healer. He was born in the city of Thebes (Egypt) in a pious Christian family, in the times of late Roman Egypt. Having received a good education – philosophy, rhetoric, religious science – Patapius deeply contemplated the transience of the world and longed for a different life: a simple one, dedicated to God and spiritual endeavor. During his young years, he went to the Egyptian desert, where he spent many years in strict asceticism: prayers, fasting, contemplation. Alone with God, he rejected worldly bustle, seeking inner purification.

However, even in the desert, Patapius’ holiness could not remain unknown: people began to come to him for spiritual advice, for consolation, and with requests for prayer. He had to flee from too large a flow of pilgrims – so he left the desert and went to the capital city of Constantinople.

In Constantinople, Patapius settled in a cell by the city wall, not far from the Blacherna Church. There, living in simplicity, fasting and prayer, he appeared before the people again casually, but sincerely. His gift of healing manifested itself here – the sick, the suffering, the spiritually tortured began to come to him. One of the first miracles attributed to him was the healing of an infant blind from birth: thanks to the saint’s prayer, the child received sight.

In the Roman Catholic Church, one of the main feasts of the Mother of God is celebrated – the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. According to Catholic doctrine from 1854, the Virgin Mary was conceived of ordinary parents, but did not inherit original sin.

Angel Day is December 8, 2025

On December 8, Peter, Kliment, Mykola, Oleksiy, Stepan, Marko, Grigoriy celebrate their name days.

We will remind that December is the month of waiting for Christmas, summing up the year and gratitude for what has been experienced. In the Orthodox calendars this is the time when the Christmas fast continues and Christmas is approaching – one of the biggest Christian holidays.
