The head of the European Union’s foreign policy, Kaya Callas, commented on Europe’s new sharp assessment of the national security strategy, noting that Europe should be more confident in its own strength, particularly in relations with Russia.

Details: Speaking at a panel discussion during the Doha Forum, Callas noted that while criticisms of the US administration may have some basis, Europe should be more confident about its own strength, particularly in relations with Russia.

Direct speech: “Europe underestimates its own strength, for example, in relation to Russia. We need to be more confident in ourselves, that’s for sure.”

Details: The 33-page document claims that European countries are facing “civilizational destruction” in part because they are hosting migrants. It accuses some European governments of unfairly censoring certain political parties – mostly far-right.

The opinion is also expressed that the Europeans are an obstacle in efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

The Trump administration has been clear that it still considers European countries important allies, but has also indicated that it will seek to support far-right parties on the continent.

Asked by the panel’s moderator, CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, whether the U.S. considers Europe an “enemy,” Callas denied such a claim, stressing that the transatlantic relationship remains important.

“The United States is still our greatest ally,” she said, adding that while Europe and the United States may not always agree on various issues, both sides must remain united.

What happened before:

  • Recently, the adviser to the US president, Alex Bruzewitz, visited Germany, where he told the leaders of the far-right party “Alternative for Germany” that he considers them “bold visionaries” who are shaping the future of the country.
  • It should be noted that after the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution classified the entire party “Alternative for Germany” as far-right, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared that it is “not democracy, but tyranny in disguise.”
  • Bundestag deputies Steffen Kotre and Rainer Rothfuss from the far-right “Alternative for Germany” are planning a trip to Sochi in mid-November.
