Opponents of the ban argue that it does more to harm local residents than to quell rowdy tourists.
Protest against the ban on nudists on beaches in Majorca / UNIAN collage, photo ua.depositphotos.comAgainst the background of the ongoing strengthening of the rules for rest on the beaches in Spain, a real political scandal broke out in the resort town of Soller on the island of Mallorca.
As Diario De Mallorca writes, the city council of Soller plans to approve a new municipal regulation that regulates the stay on the beaches. This document contains many prohibitions, restrictions and fines that can reach 3,000 euros.
What exactly does the Solyer City Council want to banAmong other things, the new rules prohibit any peak-season beach games, exercises or recreational activities “that may disturb” other beachgoers, whether on the sand or in the water, outside of designated areas (if any). At the same time, nudism also fell under the prohibited types of recreation.
In addition, the document prohibits the use of radios, loudspeakers and any sound reproduction devices, any kind of camping or overnight stays, lighting fires, using fireworks, gas canisters or flammable liquids, as well as the distribution of advertising without the permission of the municipality.
The resolution also restricts the use of pleasure boats in swimming areas, where, in addition to lifeboats, only inflatable boats and mattresses will be allowed.
The document also contains provisions that strengthen cleaning rules and prohibit any actions polluting sand, water or access points. Among other things, the presence of animals will be strictly limited on the beaches – only guide dogs and rescue animals will be allowed there during the peak season. In the off-season, animals will be allowed, but they must be on a leash and, if necessary, muzzled, and the owners will be required to clean up after them.
Politicians quarreled over nudists on beachesA socialist group in Soller has criticized the city council for its intention to push a new decree on the rules for the use of beaches. According to a PSIB statement, the Socialists consider these measures to be “reminiscences of the past” and therefore intend to introduce amendments to “soften” them or “rethink many of the ridiculous restrictions”. The party was especially upset by bans on games and nudists, Majorca Daily Bulletin writes.
According to the representative of the socialist group in the council, Jaume Mateu, although the party supports the need to introduce rules for the use of beaches, they should “promote coexistence and allow everyone to enjoy the beaches, both tourists and residents.” Meanwhile, the rules proposed by the council of the center-right People’s Party are “very strict, contrary to freedom and do not take into account the real situation of young children and families in the city.”
Other restrictions in MallorcaAs UNIAN reported, in the summer of 2025 new strict bans were introduced in Mallorca, which, among other things, prohibit tourists from buying any goods from street vendors. Vacationers are now facing huge fines for violations.
The reason for the introduction of strict rules is the desire of the local authorities to fight against excessive tourism, in particular by calming down rowdy vacationers.
However, this summer, in their struggle, Majorca reached the point where the island began to see an increase in unemployment amid the outflow of tourists.
