Last weekend we already had the opportunity to watch the duel between Milan and Rome’s Lazio at the San Siro as part of the thirteenth round of the Italian Serie A, while late on Thursday evening already this week, these two teams met each other again. However, the scenery has changed – the location of the meeting has moved to the capital’s Stadio Olimpico, and the general color of the stylized elements around the game have been brought into line with the identity of another competition – the Italian Cup and the 1/8 finals of its draw, where the draw drew between the teams of Maurizio Sarri and Massimiliano Allegri.

The Rossoneri left their home game in the championship in their usual pragmatic style (1:0), so the Eagles had every reason to want revenge in front of their own fans. And in this game, unlike the national championship, the winner would definitely be determined not by the result of 90 game minutes of regular time, but after a series of post-match penalties, while avoiding overtime.

And this game became a vivid example of the fact that at any stage, except for the late ones, these extra half an hour would have risked to finally destroy the entourage from this duel. Because the teams took on the rest, as if agreeing to drag out the determination of the strongest to the last. The first half in this context was a real disaster for spectators – the guests gave the ball away and closed in on defense, and the home team had only one moment on the counterattack in the middle of the half, but Bašić missed the goal with a long shot from the left wing.

In the second half, Allegri’s team still decided to pay more attention to their own attack, and thus even managed to be sharper than their opponents. However, it all came down to two headers from Loftus-Cheek at the end of a pass from the left flank, which did not hit the goal plane. Well, Leau’s shot was also not marked by accuracy somewhere in those minutes.

Lazio didn’t need a lot of ball at their feet after the break, and only a successful pass by Tavares from a corner from the right wing in the 80th minute to the near post was enough, where, unexpectedly for everyone, he ended up with a header at the end of Dzaccagna. Menghan had little chance to save his own team, so in the end the Rossoneri conceded without an excessive desire to somehow prevent it.

Pompey’s Marco Guida’s final whistle sent Rome’s Lazio through to face Bologna in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals, while AC Milan’s run of the tournament drew to a close.
