No matter how the war ends, no one in the West will undertake any real guarantees of Ukraine’s security.
After the war, Ukraine will not have any reliable guarantor of its security, except the Armed Forces / photo facebook.com/93OMBrAgainst the background of Donald Trump’s dubious “peaceful” diplomacy, it is becoming increasingly obvious that the “peace agreement”, whatever it may be, will not contain any real security guarantees for Ukraine. And therefore, Ukrainians will be able to count only on themselves, if in the future Russia violates the agreements reached. Foreign Policy columnist Anchal Vohra writes about this.
In her opinion, various guarantees for Ukraine will be prescribed in the future peace agreement. But their effectiveness will be doubtful. For example, we can already see how the Trump administration is scrambling to conclude business deals with the Kremlin. Hence the question: what desire will the USA have to protect Ukraine from a new attack by the Russian Federation, if the Americans do business with the Russians?
“US President Donald Trump is trying to follow the model of peace in Gaza – a quick agreement with details that will be clarified later… Trump’s proposal provides for ‘compensation’ for any guarantees they may offer, but does not give an exact answer as to how exactly they will intervene militarily if Russia violates the agreement,” the columnist notes.
Europe seems to be ready to deploy its limited contingent in Ukraine after the war. But there are serious doubts that this contingent will be ready to fight when the time comes.
“The Europeans have no idea what to do if such forces are deployed and the European contingent is attacked by Russia,” said an EU official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Anchal Vohra states that the USA has categorically refused to deploy troops under any potential scenario, and the Europeans are also not ready to die for Ukraine. Under such conditions, the “best option” for Ukraine in the future is to rely on its own forces.
According to the columnist, Ukraine will be forced to create a well-trained, motivated and highly paid army capable of opposing the Russian army of “contract convicts”. The columnist mentions the recent thesis about the “steel porcupine” that Ukraine must become in order to survive.
“For Ukrainians, the way forward – with or without an agreement – will be full of challenges. Militarily weak Ukraine will become easy prey for expansionist Russia. Despite the endless wanderings of war, heartache, suffering and loneliness, Ukrainians have no choice but to train, arm themselves and stay ready,” the columnist summarizes.
Negotiations on peace in UkraineAs UNIAN wrote, American diplomat Daniel Fried believes that the attempts of Donald Trump’s administration to stop the Russian war against Ukraine through mediation failed due to the US’s unsystematic approach, unsuccessful negotiation tactics and internal contradictions in the Trump team itself. The US negotiated publicly and inconsistently, sometimes creating tension in relations with Ukraine, while the Kremlin, adhering to its traditional tactics of maximalist demands and waiting for new concessions, could simply watch and not change its position.
We also cited the statement of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who admitted that the alliance does not have a “plan B” in case of the failure of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia or the refusal of the United States to supply weapons.
