Henriksen took charge of the team in February 2024, when Mainz were in the relegation zone, and secured their place in the Bundesliga. Last season, the coach led the club to sixth place and qualification for the Conference League. In the current season, the team has won only one game in 12 matches and is in last place in the Bundesliga table.

Sporting director Christian Heidel commented:
“Mainz 05 owes a lot to Bo Henriksen. He lifted the club from an almost hopeless situation, secured a place in the Bundesliga and promotion to the Conference League. Unfortunately, circumstances require a new approach. Bo is a great coach and a wonderful person. We wish him all the best.”
Henriksen himself added:
“Mainz 05 is a great club with great people and fans. We have achieved a lot together. Unfortunately, we have not been able to show successful football this season, but I wish the club all the best.”
Benjamin Hoffmann, who led Mainz to third place in the South-West Regional League this season, will serve as interim head coach.
