“Slovakia refused to support any funding options for Ukraine proposed by the European Commission, Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar said on December 3.”, — write: www.radiosvoboda.org
“The position of the Slovak government is very clear: we do not want to undermine any peace initiatives that are ongoing under the leadership of the US administration, and frozen assets are also part of this peace plan. So we don’t want to destroy these peace talks,” said Slovak minister Juraj Blanar.
Given the procedure, which requires the consent of a qualified majority, and not of all member states, Slovakia’s position on the issue of a reparation loan based on Russian sovereign assets is not decisive.
At the same time, the second proposal of the European Commission regarding the financing of Ukraine for 2026-2027 based on EU borrowings requires the consent of all.
When asked by Radio Liberty whether Slovakia is ready to support the idea of borrowing, Blanar answered in the negative.
“We, as the Slovak government, have very clearly stated that we will no longer support and finance the war in Ukraine. The only thing we provide to Ukraine is humanitarian aid, as well as some support with the provision of electricity and so on. But not financing the war or any loans to Ukraine,” Blanar said.
