Newborn penguins on Galindez Island / UNIAN collage, screenshotsUkrainian researchers, who are at the polar station “Akademik Vernadskyi” on Galindez Island, showed a unique video of newborn penguins communicating with one of their parents. This is reported on the Facebook page of the National Antarctic Science Center.
“Do not forget to turn on the sound. Although the babies are only a few days old, they are already actively communicating,” the researchers note.
In the video you can see an incredibly cute picture. Two tiny chicks are pressed against their mother’s belly – an adult penguin appears to be a giant compared to newborns. An adult emits trills and sounds similar to the loud purring of a cat, while the babies squeak quietly.
Scientists remind that two chicks are usually born to a pair of subantarctic penguins. Less often, there may be one or three. To lay eggs and hatch offspring, this species of penguin builds nests of stones.
The researchers noted that the video was shot in close-up.
“Although our biologists can come close to the nests to conduct the necessary research, they in any case try not to disturb the animals with their actions,” the center emphasized.
Other news about the life of penguins on HalindezThe other day, the first penguin of the season was born on Galindez Island, where the Ukrainian polar station “Akademik Vernadskyi” is located, and another one was born later.
According to the researchers, this is a fairly early hatching of the first-born subantarctic penguins on Halindez. During the past years, biologists of Ukrainian expeditions recorded this event plus or minus in the middle of December. In general, this year, penguins started coming to the island in large numbers and building nests relatively early – the researchers noticed the first matings as early as mid-September. In total, a record 7,000 subantarctic penguins live on Galindez this season, and as of the beginning of this week, biologists have counted 2,300 nests with eggs.
