According to law enforcement officers, three of the detainees were stopped at the airport when they tried to fly to Russia in transit through the United Arab Emirates. The police believe that another person, who could also have been recruited by Mantula, has already arrived in Russia.
It is noted that in South Africa it is forbidden to serve in the army of another country without the permission of the government, so the five detainees were kept in custody until the hearing on the preventive measure, scheduled for next week.
Mantula’s arrest comes amid a separate investigation into Duduzile Zuma-Sambulda, the daughter of former South African president Jacob Zuma. She is suspected of having tricked 17 more men into going to Russia and fighting as mercenaries on the side of the Russian Federation in the war against Ukraine.
According to the investigation, the men were convinced that they were going to security training that would help them get a job, but they were sent to a war zone. Because of the accusations, Zuma-Sambulda last week resigned as a member of parliament from the opposition MK party, which is led by her father.
