Fuel oil from Russian tankers was dumped on the coast of Odesa – video

On the coast of the Black Sea, in the village of Zatoka, Odesa region, pollution with a fuel-like substance was again recorded. The State Environmental Inspection of the South-Western District does not rule out that these are the consequences of a fuel oil leak from the Russian tankers “Volgoneft-212” and “Volgoneft-239”, the accident of which occurred in December 2024.

This was reported by the State Environmental Inspection of the South-Western District, showing a video of the pollution.

On November 28, state inspectors together with specialists of the Ukrainian Scientific Center for Marine Ecology (UkrNTSEM) discovered pollution, which is manifested in the form of dark streaks on the sand. Pollution is localized only on the sandy part of the coast, and its line is about one kilometer. Selected samples of sea water and pollutant are sent for laboratory analysis.

Ecologist Vladyslav Balinskyi believes that it is most likely the remains of fuel oil that were carried by the current after powerful storms. In his opinion, a significant amount of oil products is still on the seabed from the site of the accident of the Russian tankers, which were not isolated, and fuel oil is actively coming out of there.

According to Balinsky, three huge wrecks of tankers with oil products still remain under water. Fuel oil emissions, according to him, will form the so-called fatigue processes, especially in the warm season. The main volumes of residues (thousands of tons) are located west of Anapa (Russian Federation).

Oil products collected from the coastal strip must be transported to appropriate places and disposed of.

It will be recalled that on December 15, 2024, two Russian oil tankers, Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239, sank near the coast in the Kerch Strait. As a result of the accident, more than 4,000 tons of fuel oil spilled into the Black Sea.

We also wrote that, according to the Navy of Ukraine, the Russian tankers with oil products were old and, moreover, went out to sea without complying with shipping requirements.

Oil products, which leaked after the accident of Russian tankers in the Kerch Strait, are already being recorded on the southern coast of the temporarily occupied Crimea.

After the accident of two Russian tankers in the Kerch Strait, 61 dead cetaceans were found. The death of 32 of them is probably related to the fuel oil spill.
