Details: According to the proposals of the Ministry of Refugee Affairs and Migration of the Netherlands, in 2027 – when the EU directive on temporary protection expires – Ukrainians will be granted a special temporary status.

This status will help to avoid a situation in which about 120,000 Ukrainians currently living in the Netherlands will be forced to apply for refugee status at the same time – the authorities will not be able to cope with such a burden.
The temporary status will serve as an incentive for Ukrainian citizens to return home, but the condition for such a return is the establishment of peace, the proposals say.
The Ministry of Refugee Affairs and Migration of the Netherlands also suggests that Ukrainians who have a paid job in the country should independently pay for housing rent and insurance in case of illness. Those without work must apply for benefits.
The Dutch government previously said that Ukrainians who work in the country, pay taxes and thus “make the maximum contribution” should be given the opportunity to stay in the Netherlands longer.
The country is also running out of places to accommodate Ukrainians who use temporary protection.
