Details: According to VSquare, Hungarian partners in NATO and the European Union did not know about Orbán’s intentions to visit Russia; it was also probably not coordinated with the US. At the same time, one of the European sources believes that the meeting was planned for a long time and is simply a continuation of Orbán’s tradition of meeting Putin annually.

Sources of the publication reported that a “large delegation of dozens of people” will go with the Hungarian prime minister, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs Péter Szijarto, the Minister of Construction and Transport János Lázár and the National Security Adviser Marcel Biro.
VSquare’s interlocutors say that the purpose of Orbán’s visit is primarily to discuss energy issues, particularly against the backdrop of the US decision to grant Hungary a one-year exemption from sanctions on Russian oil and gas.
“Nuclear issues will also be raised, as Westinghouse will join the Russian Paksh nuclear power plant (which is being built in Hungary. – ed.) as a fuel supplier,” the article says.
Another key topic of the Hungarian-Russian negotiations will be the potential acquisition by the Hungarian oil company MOL of Gazprom’s stake in the Serbian company NIS, which could help it get out of the US sanctions.
“And Orbán will probably position this mission in Moscow as a step towards reviving the short-lived idea of a ‘peace summit’ in Budapest with the participation of Trump and Putin,” VSquare reports.
Prehistory:
- Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Russia and Hungary are discussing a potential visit by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
- In October 2023, Orban met with Putin in China. Then Orban called the Russian war against Ukraine a “military operation”.
