Experts believe that Trump’s team does not understand the need to “demonstrate power to Putin.”

The New York Times writes about it.

However, such a conversation also revealed something else – Trump’s stubborn determination to conclude any agreement with Russia to end the war in Ukraine, even if it is mainly on the terms of the Russian Federation.

Instead, the American leader sparked a rare disagreement among Republicans in Congress, shocked European allies and left many Ukrainians feeling abandoned by the US.

“He has caused delight in Russia, where stoking discord in the Western alliance and anti-American sentiment in Ukraine is considered an end in itself. And he has sparked fierce debate in Washington, where his defenders argue that negotiations with Putin are the only way to stop the bloodiest fighting in Europe since World War II,” the publication added.

At the same time, Washington foreign policy researcher, who supports limiting America’s global role, Emma Ashford emphasized:

“I’m not a big fan of the president on a lot of issues. But I think he should really be given credit for continuing to try.”

However, transcripts of leaked phone calls show that Witkoff and Russian officials were working behind the scenes on a new diplomatic push in October. It is known that on October 14, Witkoff spoke with Putin’s foreign policy adviser Yuriy Ushakov, urging the Russian president to call Trump before Zelensky’s upcoming visit.

“On October 29, according to Bloomberg, Mr. Ushakov had a telephone conversation with Kirill Dmitriev, Mr. Putin’s economic envoy, who had just met with Mr. Witkoff in Miami. Dmitriev told Ushakov that, in his opinion, the future US peace plan would be “as close as possible” to Russia’s proposals,” the NYT quotes.

Brian Fitzpatrick, a Republican from Pennsylvania and co-chairman of the Ukrainian Committee, said on social media that “these ridiculous sideshows and secret meetings must stop.”

Also, the co-chair of the “Ukrainian Club” from the Democratic Party, Representative of Illinois Mike Quigley, said in an interview that, except for Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump’s team does not understand the need to “demonstrate Putin’s strength” and “how best to unite with allies.”

“He behaves with Putin completely differently than with anyone else in the world. It makes no sense,” he believes.

Leaked conversation with Witkoff – breaking newsEarlier, Republicans reacted to the leaked conversation with Witkoff. According to them, Trump’s special envoy “behaves as if he is on the payroll of Russia.”

“This whole incident has become a fiasco and a stain on the reputation of our country. He needs to be fired,” said Congressman Don Bacon (Republican, Nebraska).

At the same time, Yuriy Ushakov, the Russian dictator’s foreign policy adviser, spoke about the leak of the conversation with Witkoff. He assumed that someone “drains” the content of such conversations.

“I talk with Witkoff quite often, but the essence of the conversations – they have a closed nature – I do not comment. But no one should comment… Someone drains, someone listens, but not us,” Ushakov added.
