“The European Union itself will make a significant contribution to security guarantees by providing funding, conducting training and supporting the defense industry. We are working on these details now, including the continuation of our current missions in Ukraine,” Kallas said.
She noted that “security guarantees for Ukraine do not change the fact that the real threat here is Russia.”
“Over the past 100 years, Russia has attacked more than 19 countries, and some of them – three or even four times. None of these countries has ever attacked Russia,” the high representative of the EU stated.
Therefore, in her opinion, in any peace agreement, it is necessary to “focus on how to get concessions from the Russian side, so that they stop aggression forever and do not try to change the borders by force.”
“The focus should be on what Russia, the aggressor, should do, and not on what Ukraine, the victim, should sacrifice,” Kallas emphasized.
“Today we confirmed our common principles: sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and Ukraine’s inalienable right to self-defense. Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,” she said.
Background:
- According to the results of the “coalition of the determined” meeting, France and Great Britain agreed on November 26 to create a working group on the preparation of security guarantees for Ukraine within the framework of the “coalition of the determined”, to which the United States and Turkey will be involved.
- It was also agreed to advance in the coming days in the search for solutions in two directions: frozen assets of Russia and security guarantees for Ukraine.
