As Reuters notes, it is currently unclear which prisoners may be released and when exactly this may happen.
The White House declined to comment, and the Belarusian embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment.
It also remains unclear what exactly the USA will offer to Lukashenka in exchange for an agreement on the release of prisoners.
One measure that US officials have informally discussed this year is easing US sanctions on Belarus’ potash industry. Belarus is one of the main global suppliers of fertilizer ingredients.
Prehistory:
- On November 10, Lukashenko announced negotiations with the US delegation. According to him, they should take place in the near future.
- Donald Trump’s administration is trying to establish contact with the regime in Minsk, as evidenced by the release of 52 Belarusian political prisoners.
- As part of these efforts, the US lifted sanctions on the Belarusian state airline Belavia.
- Also on Tuesday, November 4, the US Treasury Department eased some sanctions against Belarus, lifting measures against the national airline and allowing operations related to Lukashenka’s plane.
