Approximately 30.5 million people live in the Ukrainian territory, which is currently subject to the state. This is reported in the study Forbes Ukraine, the authors of which used four different methods of calculation, the main one being the analysis of the use of water resources.
The total population within internationally recognized Ukrainian borders is estimated at 35-35.5 million people. Analysts note that this almost coincides with the number of inhabitants in this territory in the 1920s and only 2 million more than immediately after the end of the Second World War.
The last national population census in Ukraine was conducted in 2001, when 48.46 million people were recorded. As of December 1, 2019, the number of residents of Ukraine, excluding the temporarily occupied regions of Donbass and Crimea, was estimated at 37.29 million people. The Cabinet of Ministers canceled the All-Ukrainian population census, which was planned for 2023 and approved in December 2022. It was decided to conduct the census after the end of the war. The State Statistics Service is tasked with preparing and submitting proposals for its implementation after the end or abolition of martial law in Ukraine.
As the Informant informed, Ukraine may face a demographic crisis in the future. At the moment, about 30 million citizens live in the controlled territory. And by the year 2100, this figure may be halved. This forecast was made by the Institute of Demography.
It is emphasized that of the current 30 million Ukrainians in the controlled territory, 25 million citizens will remain by 2050. And by 2100, the population will decrease to 15 million.
Thus, the demographic crisis is intensifying. It is known that in the first half of 2025, 86,795 babies were born, and 249,002 people died (three for every newborn).
In September 2024, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the Demographic Development Strategy until 2040. It contains a forecast – if nothing is done with demography, the population will decrease from 31.1 million citizens in 2024 to 28.9 million in 2040. If active measures are taken, for example, a program to support the birth rate, then in 2040 Ukraine will have 33.9 million citizens.
