Yermak’s advisor: Ukraine insists on security guarantees similar to Article 5 of NATO at the negotiations

According to Bevz, Ukraine’s position is that NATO membership is “the best, most optimal guarantee”, but there are those among NATO member countries who do not support this”, — write: www.radiosvoboda.org

Oleksandr Bevs, adviser to the head of the President’s Office and representative of the Ukrainian delegation at the negotiations with the USA in Geneva, said that Ukraine insists on receiving legally binding security guarantees that will work according to a principle similar to Article 5 of NATO. He said this on Radio Svoboda.

According to him, Ukraine’s position is still that membership in NATO is “the best, most optimal guarantee”, but the reality is that among NATO member countries there are those who do not support Ukraine’s entry into the Alliance. While there is no consensus on this in NATO, Ukraine is discussing an alternative – it is about a mechanism that should be launched automatically, without months of waiting, in the event of a new attack on Ukraine.

“In order for security guarantees to be effective, Ukraine must be offered not declaratively, but at the level of a legally binding ratified document or a series of documents, something that will reproduce the approach to security guarantees, which can be conventionally called “type of article five”, Bevs said on the air of the Svoboda Live program.

Security guarantees are one of the points of the peace plan that the US and Ukrainian presidents should discuss personally, says Bevs. In addition, the topic of discussion between Trump and Zelensky should also be territorial issues and the restoration of Ukraine.

He noted that the Ukrainian negotiating group did not even have the authority to discuss territorial issues, but only outlined red lines:

“We announced that Ukraine will not accept any recognition, and will not make any changes to the Constitution of Ukraine. And these are the red lines drawn by the Ukrainian people.”

As Axios wrote, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky wants to meet with US President Donald Trump “as soon as possible” in order to complete work on an agreement on the terms of ending the Russian-Ukrainian war.

The head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, said that perhaps the meeting will take place on November 27, when the USA celebrates Thanksgiving. According to previous Western media reports, the White House expected Zelensky to sign Trump’s peace plan by Thanksgiving.

Instead, the White House announced that a meeting between Trump and Zelensky is currently not planned for this week.

Also, according to Western media reports, the White House expected Zelensky to sign Trump’s peace plan by Thanksgiving.

On November 23, in Geneva, the United States and Ukraine tried to converge on the plan to end the war proposed by the Trump administration. In a statement by the White House and the Office of the President of Ukraine following the meeting, it was said that the parties have prepared an updated and refined concept that fully supports Ukraine’s sovereignty and will help ensure a just peace.

According to mass media, the new plan has not 28, but 19 points. It excludes demands for limiting the size of the Armed Forces and amnesty for war crimes.
