The minister was caught by the news at Mihail Kogelnicanu Air Base, where he came to celebrate Thanksgiving together with the American military.
“It was supposed to be a day of celebration, but now it’s not for celebration. We have another invasion of a Russian drone, a new challenge from Russia to Romania. A drone that the Romanian military and German Eurofighters tried to shoot down,” Mostianu said.
He said that he had just been informed about the find and only the preliminary details were known – that it was somewhere on the territory of the Vaslui district and that it was a device without a warhead. In this regard, the minister urgently returns to Bucharest to coordinate further actions.
Mostianu noted that the Romanian and German pilots, who were alerted at night, had permission to hit the drone, but decided not to shoot at it – first, because of the significant risk of collateral damage.
The minister added that Romania will soon receive new capabilities in air defense, which will help to better respond to such situations.
A photo of the unmanned aerial vehicle found, similar to the Gerbera, appeared in the media. Prefect of the judge Vaslui Eduard Popitsa said that he arrived at the place with the police after a report from a local resident of the village of Puyest. It is 50 km from the border of Romania with Moldova and more than 100 km from the border of Moldova with Ukraine.
