“Europeans must immediately and unconditionally support the peace initiative of the United States. In addition to supporting the US president, we must without delay start autonomous and direct negotiations with Russia,” Orbán wrote.
He stated in the letter that Hungary “does not support the provision by the European Union of any further financial assistance to Ukraine in any form” and “does not agree that such a decision should be made on behalf of and within the framework of the EU.”
EU official on the condition of anonymity, in response to Orbán’s letter, he stated that, in addition to Hungary, 26 other EU countries “have repeatedly made it clear that their support for Ukraine is unequivocal.”
“There is intense interaction and coordination between European leaders, as well as with non-EU partners, to continue this support in light of recent events,” he added.
What preceded: Officials in Brussels are currently negotiating with EU member states on how to leverage the use of immobilized Russian assets to provide Ukraine with a €140 billion reparations loan.
Budapest has consistently sought to block much-needed military and financial aid for Kyiv’s defense efforts, while strengthening Hungary’s ties to the Kremlin and opposing sanctions aimed at crippling Putin’s military machine.
The leaders of European states and European institutions, the prime ministers of Britain, Canada, Japan and Norway said that the project of the US “peace plan” needs additional work and they are ready to join it, but they immediately expressed concern about the demand to reduce the Ukrainian army.
