Swedish expert – about the match with Ukraine: “This is a dream draw. Perfect”

Swedish football expert Jonas Eriksson shared his thoughts on the draw for the World Cup 2026 qualification playoffs, in which the national team of his country and the national team of Ukraine will meet.

“It’s pretty much a dream draw. If we were to wish for anything before the draw, it would be a home stadium in what could be a decisive match. In any case, I had Ukraine at the top of my list, so out of two wishes, both fell through.

When I saw the groups I thought I don’t want us to be in C, D and A. We had a quick look at the groups but I thought it was a perfect draw. And when we also get a home stadium in the second match, it is clear that it is even better.

But we should know that we met Ukraine twice in official matches and both times – at Euro-2012 and at the European Championship in 2021 with the unnecessary withdrawal of Markus Danielson – these were defeats with a score of 1:2. So, we start with negative statistics.

But this is a chance. The World Cup qualifiers for Sweden is one long struggle where we crashed, drove into a ditch, crashed into a pole and still have a chance to get a driver’s license and go to the World Cup.

In fact, it’s incredible that the format made this possible, but we should be grateful. It’s a bit surreal that we have these two fantastic chances at the end, even though the World Cup qualifiers weren’t positive for us at all,” Eriksson told SVT.

It was reported that Sweden approached the UAF with an unexpected offer ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff match.
