The newspaper notes that Maryville police officer Justin Brown and another colleague were involved in the Friday evening, November 14, to protect high-ranking officials when the incident occurred.
The Merville police department noted that “citizens remained at the scene and “immediately provided emergency first aid.”
“We will never be able to express our gratitude enough to the people whose quick response saved the life of FTO Brown last night. You are true heroes,” Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp said in a statement Saturday, Nov. 15.
The publication, citing a statement from the Merville police, said that the police officer was taken to hospital in serious condition and underwent surgery on Saturday morning.
Jason Pack, director of communications for the Tennessee Department of Public Safety, said an ambulance that was part of the motorcade also stopped and provided immediate medical attention to the police officer.
A representative of the US Secret Service confirmed to the publication that Vance was in the motorcade.
“The US Secret Service is closely monitoring a serious traffic accident involving local law enforcement that occurred this evening in Maryville, Tennessee while escorting a motorcade,” said Resident Agent in Charge of the Knoxville office Catherine Pierce.
According to her, “persons who were under guard were not injured as a result of this incident.”
