Ukraine and Greece have agreed on a new direction of natural gas supply, which will increase the import of fuel to the Ukrainian gas transportation system and reduce dependence on Russian energy resources.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated this in his evening address.

The route will pass through the Greek LNG terminals and the so-called “Vertical Corridor”, which connects the infrastructure of Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine.

The decision became part of the strategy of diversification of gas supply sources, which is implemented by both Kyiv and partners in the European Union.

Within the framework of the agreements, the gas transport operators of Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine will launch a joint product for booking capacity on the Trans-Balkan route.

This will make it possible to import about 1 billion cubic meters of gas to Ukraine every year, as well as simplify traders’ access to the new route thanks to agreed technical conditions.

The Government of Ukraine emphasizes that this format of cooperation strengthens the energy security of the entire region, because it creates an alternative to Russian gas on the southern and eastern flanks of Europe.

A key role in the new scheme will be played by LNG terminals on the coast of Greece, in particular the facilities in Alexandroupolis, through which liquefied gas will flow from the US and other partner countries.

After regasification, the fuel will be transported to Bulgaria through the IGB interconnector, then through the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline through Romania and Moldova to the Ukrainian border.

Such a configuration makes it possible to quickly redirect fuel flows to where it is most needed, and strengthens the energy solidarity of the EU with Ukraine.

It will be recalled that Zelensky warned the enemy about Ukraine’s new missile program.

Zelensky also instructed to speed up the restart of top energy companies.
