President of Poland: The last time I signed the law on aid to Ukrainians

The President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, said that he signed the law on assistance to the citizens of Ukraine for the last time, and in the future they will be treated like other national minorities. Source: Gazeta.pl, “Evropeyska Pravda” Details: Karol Navrotskyi said at a rally in Minsk Mazowiecki that he will not sign another law on aid to Ukrainians unless a new decision is made. The current one, in his opinion, leads to equating Polish citizens with citizens of another country. The President explained that the initial version of the law provided for the payment of benefits to 800+ Ukrainians who do not work in Poland. As he emphasized, he considered it “unfair to the Poles” and refused to sign it. Only the corrected version, in his opinion, partially adapted to the remarks he made, received his signature. However, Navrotsky noted that this was the last time he decided to take such a step. “For the second time, I signed the law because I don’t want to be the president of chaos, but I pointed out – and when the prime minister and the parliamentary majority are looking at us – I remind them that I last signed this law on helping Ukrainians,” Navrotsky emphasized. According to the president, after three years of war, the Ukrainian minority in Poland should be treated with due responsibility, but on the same terms as other national minorities. “The law was adopted because I don’t want to add to the chaos. But I expect that further decisions will be realistic and fair,” he emphasized. Karol Nawrocki emphasized that the state should develop solutions that will protect both Polish prosperity and the presence of Ukrainians in the country. At the same time, he warned that the absence of a reasonable policy could mean “chaos in March next year.” The president said he was counting on the government and the parliamentary majority, but made it clear that he would no longer agree to the law, which he believes puts Ukrainians in a privileged position compared to Polish citizens. The president of Poland vetoed the previous law on assistance to Ukrainians, citing the allegedly unfairly large amount of social assistance paid to Ukrainian refugees. The new law, urgently prepared by the Polish government, was finally approved by the parliament on September 17. Among other things, the law extends the legality of stay in Poland for Ukrainian citizens who fled the war until March 4, 2026. It strengthens control over the receipt of social assistance by foreigners, in particular the 800+ program. The right to it will be related to professional activity and education of children in a Polish school. An exception, for example, are parents of children with disabilities. The law also introduces restrictions on the possibility of using medical services by adult citizens of Ukraine. It is, in particular, about medical and medicinal programs, medical rehabilitation and dental treatment. Read also the article “EvroPravda”: Punish the Ukrainians.

The president said he was counting on the government and the parliamentary majority, but made it clear that he would no longer agree to the law, which he believes puts Ukrainians in a privileged position compared to Polish citizens.
