Malta’s national team scored a historic victory in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, beating Finland 1-0. This is the first success of the team in qualifying matches for the World Cup in more than four years.

Malta’s previous victory in qualifying came on 1 September 2021, when the team convincingly defeated Cyprus 3-0. Since then, the Maltese could not win a single victory in the qualifying matches.

The team also broke a long streak without victories away from home in official matches. Malta last won away from home on September 10, 2024, when they defeated Andorra (1:0) in the League of Nations.

After the victory over Finland, the Maltese national team has 5 points and is in fourth place in Group G, maintaining the chances to climb higher in the standings.
