The inability of the German government to finance the needs of Ukraine led to the collapse of the coalition.
Olaf Scholz led Germany in conditions of continuous internal and external crises / photo ua.depositphotos.comOlaf Scholz’s government in Germany collapsed at the end of last year over the issue of aid to Ukraine. The former chancellor himself stated this in an interview with Die Zeit.
“It should not be forgotten: I dissolved the previous government because an agreement was not reached on approximately 15 billion euros to finance additional measures for Ukraine and Ukrainians in Germany,” he said, answering one of the questions.
As Scholz noted, the stumbling block was the removal of the so-called “budget brake” – a legal limit on the budget deficit in Germany. In the end, this “brake” was loosened, but only after the Scholz government collapsed.
He noted that if it weren’t for this, the current government of Mertz would either have to cut costs for Germany’s internal needs, or refrain from increasing military support for Ukraine.
The government of Scholz: what you need to knowOlaf Scholz became the Federal Chancellor of Germany on December 8, 2021. Formally, he was in power until March 25, 2025, and then until May 6, 2025, he temporarily performed the duties of the head of government during the transition period after the dissolution of the coalition. Thus, Scholz’s government lasted three years and three months, rather than the full four-year term as is usually the case in Germany.
The period of Scholz’s reign was accompanied by serious difficulties. Germany’s economic growth has slowed due to the energy crisis, rising prices and the consequences of the war in Ukraine. The three-party coalition turned out to be internally unstable. Ongoing internal disputes over climate, tax and industrial policy eventually led to one party leaving the government in November 2024. This effectively deprived the cabinet of its parliamentary majority and led to the early termination of its mandate.
