This is evidenced by a new clinical study Does Eliminating Coffee Avoid Fibrillation (Decaf), writes The Guardian.
200 patients with a chronic form of arrhythmia took part in the experiment. It found that those who continued to drink at least one cup of coffee a day had a 17% lower risk of having another episode of arrhythmia compared to those who stopped caffeine altogether.
The study was conducted among elderly people from the United States, Canada and Australia, using electrocardiograms and portable monitors to monitor their health. According to cardiologist Gregory Marcus of the University of California, San Francisco, “the results demonstrate a potential protective effect of caffeine against atrial fibrillation.”
At the same time, experts emphasize that it is too early to draw final conclusions. In particular, the influence of other caffeinated beverages, physical activity and diet of the participants was not taken into account. Cardiologist Johanna Contreras from the Mount Sinai Clinic in New York noted that people with arrhythmia can consume coffee in moderation: “A cup in the morning won’t hurt.”
The findings of the study were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and presented at the American Heart Association conference in New Orleans.
More on studying the benefits of coffeeIt will be recalled that studies by American doctors have also shown that a couple of cups of coffee a day is usually safe for most people and beneficial for health. However, doctors warn, coffee can cause a jump in blood pressure, which can lead to negative consequences.
