Details: The bill, supported by 60 votes (40 against), including almost all Republicans and 8 Democrats, is sent to the House of Representatives for final approval.

Advertising:

The bill would restore funding to federal agencies cut off on October 1 and stop President Donald Trump’s campaign to cut federal staff by preventing any layoffs until January 30.

The deal will then go to the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, where Speaker Mike Johnson said he would like to pass it as early as Wednesday and send it to Trump for his signature. Trump called the government reopening deal “very good.”

The deal would extend funding through Jan. 30, 2026, leaving the federal government on track to increase the total debt by $38 trillion and run an annual deficit of $1.8 trillion.

What preceded: The U.S. Senate took the first step toward ending the largest shutdown in history Sunday night, as a group of Democratic lawmakers moved toward a compromise plan to reopen the government.

We will remind: The U.S. government largely shut down on Oct. 1 — a so-called shutdown — as deep partisan divisions prevented Congress and the White House from reaching a funding deal.
