Details: Zelensky noted that King Charles III played an important behind-the-scenes role in encouraging the US president to do more to support Ukraine after a stormy Oval Office meeting in February in front of cameras, when Trump publicly intimidated Zelensky and kicked him out of the White House.

During a state visit to Great Britain in September, Trump held a meeting with the king.

“I don’t know all the details, but as I understand it, His Majesty sent several important signals to President Trump,” Zelenskyy said.

He noted that Trump respects the king and considers him a “very important” person, which he says is a sincere compliment that “a lot of people don’t get.”

“His Majesty is very sensitive to our people. Maybe ‘sensitive’ is not quite the right word. He is very supportive of us,” Zelenskyy said.

The president also said that, unlike other Western leaders, he is not “afraid” of Donald Trump, and denied reports that their last meeting in Washington was tense, adding that he has a good relationship with the US president.

The president denied media reports that Trump tossed out maps of the battlefield during a heated exchange in October at the White House, where he had arrived hoping to secure the delivery of US Tomahawk cruise missiles. “He didn’t throw anything away. I’m sure of it,” Zelenskyi said. He described their relationship as “normal”, “businesslike” and “constructive”.

According to the Financial Times, Trump allegedly pressured Zelensky to agree to Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s maximalist terms for ending the war, and said the Russian leader would “destroy” Ukraine if she did not agree. Zelenskyi said that the meeting took place differently.

A visiting Ukrainian delegation set up three stands in front of Trump and his team outlining a series of measures, including weapons and economic sanctions, that would “weaken” Moscow, he said. The goal was to reduce Russia’s ability to bomb Ukraine and force Putin to sit down at the negotiating table.

Zelensky said that “everyone in the world” is afraid of Trump.

When asked if this also applies to him, he replied: “No … we are not America’s enemies. We are friends. So why should we be afraid?”.

The publication also notes that a few seconds after Zelensky sat down to talk with The Guardian, the lights went out in the Mariinsky Palace. When the palace’s back-up generator was switched on, the lights came back on.

What preceded: In September, Politico wrote that King Charles III could influence Trump’s position on Ukraine.

On September 17, at a state dinner with US President Donald Trump, Charles III declared his support for Ukraine.
