Details: According to Rutte, it is important for NATO countries to talk more with the public about nuclear deterrence, “so that they understand how it contributes to our overall security.”
“When Russia uses dangerous and uncompromising nuclear rhetoric, our peoples should know that there is no reason to panic, because NATO has a powerful nuclear deterrent to preserve peace,” he added.
The Secretary General called NATO’s nuclear deterrence “the highest guarantee of our security”, adding that it must remain reliable, safe and effective.
“And Putin must know that a nuclear war can never be won and can never be waged,” Rutte added.
Last year, the Secretary General of the Alliance called for the Kremlin’s nuclear threats to be ignored in the context of aid to Ukraine, explaining that he saw no signs of the possible use of nuclear weapons.
NATO held its annual Steadfast Noon nuclear deterrence exercise in October.
