Prices for train tickets in Ukraine are several times lower than the real cost of passenger transportation.
Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, chairman of the board of Ukrzaliznytsia, said this, reports AIN.
“Ukrzaliznytsia” estimates the cost of one trip in a reserved carriage at approximately UAH 1,040, while the average fare is currently only UAH 374. About 30% of all passenger transports are on reserved carriages.
The situation is similar with other types of carriages: the company estimates the cost of one trip in a compartment at UAH 1,335 for an average tariff of UAH 606; for the first class “Intercity” these indicators are UAH 1,017 and UAH 691, respectively; for SV wagons – UAH 2,576 and UAH 1,437.
In total, 56 of the 98 passenger trains operating in Ukraine are unprofitable. This is related to the specifics of social routes, the use of diesel locomotives or other technical factors.
Earlier, UZ announced its intention to increase the prices of passenger tickets, in particular for SV cars and first class Intercity trains.
The losses of “Ukrzaliznytsia” for 9 months of 2025 exceeded UAH 7 billion.
