Between 28 and 30 million people currently live in Ukraine, and the discrepancy in numbers is explained by different methods of counting. Ella Libanova, director of the Institute of Demography and Research named after Mykhailo Ptukh, voiced this estimate of the population.
The expert explained in an interview for the Orestocracy project that the figure of 30 million is obtained when the information of mobile operators is taken as a basis, and 28 million – when “dancing” from different registers.
Libanova emphasized that the return of Ukrainians to their homes depends primarily on security and the end of the war. However, other factors influence the choice: whether people have been able to adapt abroad, whether their work corresponds to the profession, how the children feel at school, as well as the circumstances of departure (with family or not). For example, according to Polish statistics, about 70% of Ukrainian women of working age already work abroad.
The demographer assumes that this time the “patriotism factor” will not work as it did at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, when 200,000 men returned to Ukraine. She believes that a third of Ukrainians abroad will return home. “In 2022, I dreamed that 60% would return. Now it is unreal. Because people will now weigh the situation much more carefully,” said Libanova, adding that the countries that accepted Ukrainians will facilitate their return after the end of the war.
Meanwhile, in Transcarpathia, the number of ethnic Hungarians has halved in three years of full-scale war. Before the war, there were 150,000 of them.
