In Odesa, a monument to the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin was covered with wooden slabs. The structure was installed by representatives of communal services on Primorsky Boulevard, where the monument has been standing since the middle of the 19th century.
Now the figure of the poet is completely hidden from passers-by – only the base of the monument is visible.
According to city officials, the construction of temporary protection is connected with the decision of the authorities to protect historical objects, which cause a controversial reaction among residents.
In recent years, the city has repeatedly heard calls to dismantle or relocate the monument, given its symbolic importance in the context of the war with Russia.
Some Odessans support this initiative, stressing the need to revise the attitude to Russian cultural heritage.
The building of the Monumental Council of the city was also informed that the issue of the future fate of the monument is currently under consideration. Possible options are its transfer to the museum space or storage in funds.
For the time being, the authorities assure that no dismantling actions are being carried out, and the closure design is intended to prevent acts of vandalism and conflicts around the facility.
