Villarreal won the derby at the Mestalla for the first time in seven years, causing an earthquake in Valencia and among its fans. Villarreal took the lead thanks to a controversial late first-half penalty awarded by Alberola Rojas after a VAR intervention that many felt should not have happened. Gerard converted the penalty, making the score 0:1 before the break.
