Villarreal took the lead thanks to a controversial late first-half penalty awarded by Alberola Rojas after a VAR intervention that many felt should not have happened. Gerard converted the penalty, making the score 0:1 before the break.
In the second half, Marcelino’s men showed their strength and showed why they are a Champions League team. Villarreal took advantage of the free zones on the field and carried out effective counterattacks: Komesanya scored the second goal after Mikautadze’s action, bringing the score to 2:0. The win further angered the Mestalla stands, where fans expressed their displeasure with Valencia’s players and the coach’s decisions.
Valencia tried to close the gap, but their attacks were not sharp enough. Danjuma had a chance to score, but Villarreal’s goalkeeper blocked the ball, and Mikautadze missed several chances. In the end, Villarreal won an important victory, and anger remained on the field and in the stands.
