Universal’s forthcoming Miami Vice movie appears to have found its Crockett.

Austin Butler is in talks to play James “Sonny” Crockett in director Joseph Kosinski’s planned adaptation of the 1980s NBC series that saw Don Johnson originate the role. The Hollywood Reporter reported earlier this week that Michael B. Jordan is in talks to portray fellow Miami undercover detective Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs.

The new project has a script from Eric Warren Singer and Dan Gilroy. Kosinski and Dylan Clark serve as producers.

Universal has scheduled the film for theatrical release on Aug. 6, 2027. Shooting is set to begin next year.

Deadline was first to report on Butler’s involvement.

More to come.
