The EU accused TikTok and Meta of violating transparency rules – they face a fine of 6% of annual turnover

The European Commission said Meta and TikTok breached the Digital Services Act (DSA) by failing to give researchers “adequate access” to the platforms’ public data. CNBC writes about it.

According to the Commission’s preliminary findings, Meta also failed to provide Facebook and Instagram users with simple tools to report illegal content and mechanisms to appeal moderation decisions.

The EU emphasizes that researchers’ access to social network data is necessary to assess the impact of platforms on the mental and physical health of users, particularly minors. Meanwhile, Meta said it disagrees with the claims and believes its updated tools comply with the law. TikTok has not yet commented on the situation.

If the accusation is confirmed, the companies may face a fine of up to 6% of the annual turnover. Previously, Meta was already fined 200 million euros for violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA), and TikTok – 530 million euros for transferring user data to China.
