Secret forest hovels: police revealed where fugitive father from New Zealand hid three children

New Zealand police have released new photos of two forest camps where a father has been for almost 4 years was hiding his three children from all over the world.

The photo shows remote hiding places used by 46-year-old Tom Phillips, a fugitive father who was shot and killed by police in September, CNN reports.

These are two large, well-equipped camps carefully camouflaged by dense vegetation to the north and east of Morocco, on the west coast of the country.

Investigators believe that it was the father, two daughters and the son who spent most of the time. These locations allowed Phillips and his children, ages 9 to 12, to move freely between the coast, farmland and forests.

Thanks to these hiding places, the family managed to remain unnoticed until the morning of September 8, when the police finally tracked them down and took the children from the thick of the forest.

The pictures show a camp with a wooden hut made of logs and probably covered with a thatched roof. There were no solid walls, so moisture and wind got inside.

Inside were raw soil, a plastic bucket, two half-empty jerry cans, and a thick rope tied to a stump that supported a wooden post.

The second hiding place – a structure with a pointed roof – was made of logs and branches. Inside there is a table made of logs, several sacks, ropes, a helmet, and the roof is covered with a polyethylene awning.

Another photo shows a low halabuda, covered with leaves, in which you can only sit, not stand.

Law enforcement officers say that it was almost impossible to accidentally come across these places, and to approach Phillips in such conditions is “extremely dangerous.”

“As we mentioned earlier, we knew he had a weapon and was prepared to use it.”said Detective Ross McKay.

Investigators seized various items from the camps for examination. Police are investigating whether anyone helped Phillips escape.

“We are moving forward with the investigation and believe he was assisted by a small number of people at various times over the four years.”– added McKay.

It will be recalled that Tom Phillips disappeared with his three children in December 2021 after a painful breakup with his wife when they were deciding custody issues.

He was initially wanted for failure to appear in court in a case of misleading the police, but over time the list of charges grew – in particular, he was suspected of robbing a bank in May 2023.

The police repeatedly organized large-scale searches for children after individual testimonies of eyewitnesses, even involving airplanes and helicopters.

Law enforcement eventually intercepted Phillips on a country road, where he opened fire and wounded an officer before being shot and killed by police.

During the shooting, the eldest daughter was next to the father. The two younger children were found alone in the forest a few hours later.
