The Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced 21-year-old Yana Suvorova, the administrator of the “Melitopol is Ukraine” Telegram channel, finding her guilty of committing a terrorist attack, espionage and participating in a terrorist group. Suvorova was sentenced to 14 years in prison. The trial was held behind closed doors, which drew criticism from human rights activists and the media.

It is reported “Mediazone”.

Suvorova was detained on August 20, 2023 in occupied Melitopol, when Russian security forces carried out mass arrests of journalists and bloggers associated with pro-Ukrainian media. According to the FSB, these channels were used to collect intelligence information. Suvorova was accused, in particular, of providing data that led to an attack by the Ukrainian armed forces on the college building, where the headquarters of the Russian Guard and the FSB were located.

Suvorova’s trial is part of the systemic pressure on independent journalists in the occupied territories. The European Federation of Journalists called for justice for imprisoned Ukrainian journalists and called for the release of 31 media persons currently being held in Russia. The situation highlights the threats faced by journalists working in conditions of war and repression.

We will remind that in the temporarily occupied Crimea, a resident of the village of Olenivka, Black Sea region, was sentenced to 17 years in a high-security prison.

Russian invaders condemned up to 16 years of imprisonment in a strict-regime colony of ZNPP worker Ruslan Lavryk. He was sentenced to a false charge.

Earlier, the military court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced the captured Ukrainian fighter of the “Azov” brigade, Dmytro Remez, to 18 years in a strict regime colony.
