As reported in the press service of the Arthouse Traffic film company, five films will be shown during this year’s festival:
“Sound of Falling” (German: In die Sonne schauen / English: Sound of Falling) – a drama directed by Masha Shilinski, which is one of the most notable German films this year: among other things, it won the Jury Prize at Cannes and became Germany’s entry for the Oscar in the Best International Feature Film category. The plot unfolds on one German farm around four women from different eras. They gradually uncover dark family secrets that intertwine their destinies through centuries of pain and silence. The film currently has a rating of 7.2 out of 10 on IMDb.
“Light” (German Das Licht, English The Light) – a psychological drama by Tom Tykwer (“Run, Lolo, Run”, “Perfumer: The Story of a Murderer”, “Cloud Atlas”, the series “Babylon-Berlin”), one of the main names of modern German cinema. This film opened the Berlinale and received two nominations for the German Film Award. The focus is on a typical Berlin family full of problems, which is saved from the crisis by a Syrian refugee. The film currently has a rating of 5.7 out of 10 on IMDb.
“Reflection No. 3” (German: Miroirs No. 3) – a drama by Christian Petzold, another iconic German director, whose films (“The Flaming Sky”, “Undine”, “Barbara”, “Phoenix”, “Transit”) have been repeatedly presented at the festival “New German Cinema” in past years. The world premiere of the film took place at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. The tape tells about a woman who, having survived a car accident, ends up in a strange family, which unexpectedly surrounds her with their love. But later it turns out that this family has something to hide. The main role in the film was played by one of the most famous German actresses of our time, Paula Behr, who repeatedly starred in Petzold. The film currently has a rating of 6.7 out of 10 on IMDb.
“Islands” (German: Islands) – Jan-Ole Gerster’s love thriller from the Berlinale program. BAFTA Award nominee Sam Riley (“Control,” “The Witcher,” “A Dangerous Element,” “On the Road”), Stacey Martin (“Nymphomaniac,” “The Brutalist”) and Jack Farthing (“Spencer: The Princess Diana Mystery”) star in the film. The main character is a former professional tennis player who leads an aimless life in the Canary Islands, working as a trainer in a hotel. However, because of his intimacy with one of the tourists, he gets into a dangerous situation. The film currently has a rating of 6.4 out of 10 on IMDb.
“What Marielle Knows” (German: Was Marielle weiß, English: What Marielle Knows) – a comedy by Friedrich Gambalek, also from the Berlinale program. The film revolves around a teenager who gets slapped at school, which gives her the ability to see and hear everything her parents do. When the couple’s most shameful secrets come to light, an absurd game of manipulation begins, in which the couple tries to maintain a facade in front of their daughter, who knows everything about them. The film currently has a rating of 6.6 out of 10 on IMDb.
