A month-long police operation has ended in Ganjam district (Odisha state), during which 684 people involved in illegal gambling were arrested. 28.3 lakh rupees (about 339 thousand dollars), 230 phones and 35 motorcycles were seized.
The operation lasted from September 15 to October 14, at the height of the holiday season, when the activity of gambling establishments traditionally increases. A total of 113 cases have been registered, the highest in Bhanjanagar district, where 138 players were arrested and Rs 4.8 lakh seized.
According to police officer Subhendu Patra, illegal games often lead to violations of public order. Police have stepped up enforcement and vowed to continue raids to prevent similar incidents in the future.
