“I want to be honest about the situation. It’s not perfect and we know that. The fans deserve a concrete answer. I don’t want to talk too much about myself. Sometimes I can say something, but now is the wrong time. I’m a coach who wants to succeed. I’ve worked hard for it. I was the best coach of the year in Romania and also according to the fans’ polls. I fought for trophies, them won I know what it means to be a champion. I know this feeling. I know what it means to work under enormous pressure. It is not easy now because we are not getting the expected results.
But I am a mature person and I want to show that the team is above all else. This is absolutely normal and fair. After the last match, I asked for a meeting with the management. I am glad that I am lucky enough to talk to people who know their stuff. I have demonstrated my ability to take optimal action for the team. It was a very important conversation, which was preceded by a detailed analysis.
We have made a very important decision regarding my contact with Legia. Of course, I can’t go into details. The director said that the financial issues were the easiest when I signed my contract. This is true. I came to win trophies, and finances did not matter to me. There was no point in talking about an extra few thousand when I was being offered three times as much. This is the reality – let’s not be afraid to talk about it.
As for the rest of the contract, it is complex and very professional. I don’t want to go into details, but it was never my intention to block the club so as not to deprive them of the opportunity to make the best decision, even if that meant changing the coach. We had a long conversation, recently another one. I was ready for any decision if it was in the club’s favor.
It’s hard for me. I am a young coach, I have a great future, but the interests of the club always come first. If I am here with the team in Krakow, you should get more answers from the club. It was Legia’s decision. I have a clear conclusion about what happened now, in the last weeks.
We started the season very well, in very difficult circumstances, after many changes. We won the trophy. We played against title contenders in Poland and did not lose. We qualified for the European Cups, but the last two matches were unsuccessful. We have lost the trust of the fans. I think, theoretically, we could easily score another 5-6 points in the championship. We controlled the course of many matches. We made a few mistakes, we were naive, but we were also a little unlucky. This is the period in my career when I was the least fortunate. This is not the end of our team. We need to improve, but I know that the real face of Legia is the good moments, not the last two matches. But two matches were enough to spoil everything.
My assistants and I spend a lot of time analyzing and preparing for matches. Believe me, in the last two matches we did not act superficially. It all started with a match with Gurnik. We had a good period, but we gave away too many gifts and lost. Before that, we played five good matches. After that match, we went in a direction we shouldn’t have gone.
The pressure began to overwhelm us – we lost confidence. We need good results to regain confidence. First, we have to be men, not just football players. We have to continue our training process because it is very good.
One big problem is that we have to be more effective in the final third. We create a lot of chances, but we don’t convert them. Football shows that 70% possession of the ball does not give a good result. It is necessary to demand positive results from possession of the ball. Sometimes you need to act more directly – counterattacks, standards, vertical play. Teams give us space. We need to take chances and show more confidence in the face-to-face game. Otherwise, we will be vulnerable to counterattacks.
Tomorrow we play Shakhtar Donetsk. They have great individual qualities, many talented Brazilians. They also have excellent Ukrainian players with excellent tactical experience. Shakhtar is in many ways similar to us in its style of play. They score a lot and try to control the game. I wonder what tomorrow will bring. Two matches ago, they lost in the championship with a score of 1:4. I trust my team, although it will be a very difficult match. Everyone should be fully prepared. It will be a difficult match, but we need character to possess the ball, create chances and score goals,” the club’s press service quoted Yordenescu as saying.
