2 golds and 2 finals: magical performance of Ukrainian wrestlers at the World Championship

In the Serbian city of Novi Sad, the World Wrestling Championship among wrestlers under the age of 23 is taking place these days. The representatives of the Greco-Roman style were the first to appear on the carpets. Although the draw for two sets of awards is still ahead, we can safely say that the Ukrainian classics performed excellently: Irfan Mirzoev (weight category up to 77 kg) and Yehor Yakushenko (up to 97 kg) won gold, Ivan Chmyr (up to 87 kg) won silver, and Ruslan Abdiyev (up to 82 kg) will compete in the final on Thursday. It is also significant that out of ten of our representatives, only one returns home without a single victory in the asset.

Read more about the performance of the Ukrainians in this review from Sport.ua.

Let’s start with the brightest event of Wednesday evening – the final fight in the weight category up to 97 kg, in which the star representative of our team Yehor Yakushenko effectively defeated the silver medalist of the Asian Championship in this age group Yussuf Matsiyev from Kazakhstan with a score of 6:1. Thus, 19-year-old Yehor Yakushenko won the third gold of youth majors this year: before Novi Sad, he won the European Championship U23 and the European Championship U20. If it wasn’t for the defeat in the Euro U20 final, the collection could have been even more unique. After all, Yehor’s achievements are already impressive, because last year he won the World and European U20 championships.

It should be noted that on the Serbian mats, Yakushenko fought with his inherent ease and effectiveness in all four bouts. On the way to the final, he defeated Georgian Luka Gabisonia 8:0, after the last effective action with a final score of 3:3, he defeated the representative of the collective farm named after Lukashenka Abubakar Haslakhanov, and in the semifinals he defeated Estonian Richard Kalerlson 6:3.

European champion Yehor Yakushenko:

Crimean Tatar Irfan Mirzoyev, who represents the Poltava region and competes in the weight category up to 77 kg, has been in the top bracket of representatives of his weight category in various age groups for a long time. In particular, at the 2023 World Championship among wrestlers not older than 23 years, Irfan won silver.

Mirzoev started his performance in Novi Sad with a difficult 6:4 victory over Finland’s Yonny Sarkkinen, the European U23 champion who competed at the Olympics in Paris last year. Then there was another difficult 3:1 victory over Turk Muslim Barga. Mirzoev had the easiest quarter-final fight, in which he defeated Serbian Zalan Pek 8:0. Perhaps the main victory was won by Irfan in the semi-finals, winning with a score of 2:2 after the last effective action of the reigning European champion among adults, Levente Levay from Hungary. And in the final, the Ukrainian defeated the Georgian Temuri Ordzhonikidze 4:1 with a significant advantage, thus bringing Ukraine the first gold of the championship.

Ivan Chmyr won silver in the weight category up to 87 kg. This result is probably the maximum at the moment, given that in the final our wrestler faced Iranian Golamreza Farrokhi, who a little more than a month ago became the world champion among adults. Actually, the Persian won now. He overcame the Ukrainian in the fight for gold ahead of time, establishing a 10:0 advantage in just two minutes.

And on the way to the final, Chmyr defeated four opponents: Serbian Andrija Mihailovic – 3:1, Georgian Achiko Bolkvadze – 1:1 (in the last effective action), Frenchman Vladimir Karkhaidze – 3:1 and Polish Yassin Ben Labeda – 2:1.

For Ivan Chmyry, this award is the first at the level of world championships in any age group. Previously, he was the bronze medalist of the European Championship U20 in 2023.

Ivan Chmyr Tomorrow, on the final competitive day for representatives of the Greco-Roman style of this championship, the representative of the weight category up to 82 kg, Ruslan Abdiev, will bring the fourth award to Ukraine. I want to believe that it will be another gold. Ruslan, who has already competed in the last two adult world championships, defeated the Iranian Abolfazl Mehmedi 4:3 at the start of the current world championship in Novi Sad. Then there was a 9:0 victory over the Chinese Maimaiti Abudushalam. In the quarterfinals, Ruslan was stronger than the American Beka Melelashvili – 2:1. The semi-final fight against Georgian Data Chhaidze turned out to be the most difficult, which our wrestler won with a score of 1:1 due to the fact that he was the last to perform effectively. In the final on Thursday, October 23, in the evening, Abdiyev will fight with the winner of the previous two U23 world championships, Alexandrin Gutsa from Moldova.

Ruslan Abdiev throws Beka Melelashvili The three-time Euro U23 champion, heavyweight Mykhailo Vyshnyvetskyi also expected to climb the podium. The Ukrainian conceded 0:6, and since the opponent reached the final, he continued the fight in the consolation tournament, which began with a convincing 10:1 victory over Hungarian Mate Veg. Since the Asian lost the next fight, the Ukrainian was also eliminated.
