The transfer of Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighters to Ukraine will also involve additional missiles and bombs from partners, since any aircraft is only a platform for weapons.
This was announced by Yuriy Ignat, head of the communications department of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reports Ukrinform.
Ignat emphasized that the price of the Gripen aircraft is about $50 million, and this price is determined by the technological equipment. However, the key is weaponry.
According to him:
- Gripen has its own nomenclature of weapons, some of which are related to “NATO” aircraft, and some of which are unique.
- Getting the Gripen would also mean additional weapons from partner countries that Ukraine could use.
- Additional aviation platforms and means of destruction are extremely necessary, because today missiles and bombs are in short supply, and Russia uses up to 6 thousand KABs (guided aerial bombs) per month on the territory of Ukraine.
The speaker noted that Gripen is suitable for Ukraine, as it is one of the cheapest models, relatively inexpensive to maintain and can easily use Ukrainian airfields. He also reminded that Ukrainian pilots have already mastered the Gripen, in particular, participated in familiarization flights.
Ukraine and Sweden have signed a memorandum of intent to purchase 120-150 modern Saab JAS 39 Gripen E fighters. This agreement is designed for 10-15 years and paves the way for building a “very serious Air Force of Ukraine.”
It was previously reported that Sweden is considering the possibility of selling a large batch of the latest JAS 39 Gripen E fighters to Ukraine. It is about 120 aircraft — this could become the largest defense deal in Sweden’s history.
