Five stages before the end of the season, Piastri can no longer boast of a big advantage over Verstappen and teammate Lando Norris. However, he is still confident in his own abilities.
“I’d still rather be in my position than in the position that Norris and Verstappen are in. Obviously this weekend was not what I wanted or expected. This weekend was completely different to the previous two: Baku was a bit of a disaster for completely different reasons and Singapore was the way it was. So I think this weekend was a bit unusual compared to others,” Piastre said.
After winning the US Grand Prix, Max Verstappen admitted for the first time in the season that he was in the championship race. But Piastri is not going to shift the focus from his partner to the four-time world champion.
“Obviously he’s in contention for the title and he’s fast, but the most important thing for me is just to try to find out why this weekend was difficult and try to get back to the form I had at the start of the season. That’s my main challenge and if we can find that form again then the results will follow.
The title is still a long way off, at least for Max. Of course, he caught up with his rivals quite quickly, but with five stages to the end of the championship, the gap is not so small. So I think that if we can find our rhythm again, everything will take care of itself.”
We will remind that thanks to the victory in the Grand Prix of the United States, Max Verstappen took the third place in the history of Formula 1 in terms of the number of podiums won.
