Wikipedia reported a drop in traffic due to AI resumes and social media

Vlad Cherevko I have been interested in various types of electronics and technologies since the early 2000s. I like to play computer games and understand the operation of various gadgets. I regularly follow the news of the technology world and write materials about it myself.

Visits to Wikipedia by users decreased by 8% year-on-year. This was reported in a blog by Marshall Miller of the Wikimedia Foundation, who explained that the drop became apparent after an update to the bot detection system. Much of the abnormally high traffic in May and June came from bots designed to bypass security, he said.

Miller noted that the main factors behind the decline are the spread of generative artificial intelligence and changing ways of searching for information. In particular, search engines increasingly provide answers directly in the form of AI resumes, without redirecting users to sites. In addition, the younger generation of Internet users is now looking for information in the form of short videos on social platforms.

A representative of the Wikimedia Foundation emphasizes that even under such conditions, the role of the encyclopedia does not diminish, because its materials are still used as a source of knowledge, even if people do not visit the site directly. At the same time, there are still risks: fewer visitors may lead to a reduction in the number of volunteers editing articles and less financial support from donors.

Wikipedia already tested its own AI resumes, but suspended the project after criticism from editors. The organization is currently developing a new content attribution system and forming teams to attract new readers. Miller emphasized that companies that use Wikipedia’s materials should facilitate the transition of users to the site itself.

He also urged to support the creation and integrity of informational content by going to the original source and reminded that behind this data, which is used by artificial intelligence systems, is the work of real people and it deserves support.

By the way, recently the company Penske Media Corporation, which owns the well-known publications Rolling Stone, Variety and Billboard, filed a lawsuit against Google, accusing it of using the “AI Review” feature that appears when issuing search results. According to Penske Media, this feature reduces traffic to its sites and negatively affects revenues. Google, in turn, later denied that the AI-generated resume was reducing search traffic.
